Paint vs. Ceramics: The Armory Hosts Two Adult Art Classes via Zoom

Published on Oct 27, 2020

While the Armory Center for the Arts is closed to the public, that doesn’t stop them from hosting two great art classes for adults – Hand Building Ceramics and Linoleum Carving for Letterpress – in six weekly sessions each, starting on Tuesday, October 27.

In Hand Building Ceramics, you will learn clay hand-building techniques to be able to create functional and nonfunctional ceramic art, and how to build your ceramic pieces with coils, slab construction using stencils, and clay pinching methods. Additionally, you will explore surface textures accentuated by overlapping glazes. You will see the beauty of the final results as your pieces come out of the kiln.

Classes will be on Zoom Tuesdays, 6 to 8 p.m., up to December 8, and will be handled by Armory Teaching Artist and ceramics instructor Elonda Norris.

Registration fees are $293 for Armory Center members, $325 for non-members. Tuition covers all six meetings, materials, and kiln firings. These materials will be available for curbside pickup prior to the start of class. For a $30 deposit, students can borrow these tools: rolling dowel, needle tool, wooden modeling tools, metal loop tool, smoothing rib, and ware board. The deposit will be refunded upon equipment return.

To register, go to www.eventbrite.com/e/hand-building-ceramics-adults-tickets-124340841805.

Linoleum Carving for Letterpress classes begin on Wednesday, October 28, 10 to 11:30 a.m., up to December 9. Open for adults 18 and older, the classes will encourage students to expand on their carving skills while preparing to return for in-person classes. They will do carving with the instructor, improve their carving skills and cover alternative techniques not covered in the normal Letterpress class. The class will be taught by Armory Center Letterpress Studio Director Denise El-Hoss, who is also the owner and operator of Figgy Press, a custom letterpress studio.

Classes will be conducted on Zoom. Registration fees are $239 for Armory Center members and $265 for non-members.
