Pasadena Black August Film Festival Announced

Published on Jul 7, 2022

The Pasadena African American Film Foundation is hosting the 2022 Black August Film Festival on Friday and Saturday, August 12 and 13, at Boston Court Pasadena.

The festival, in its first season, will feature films submitted from around the world that explore the social and economic issues affecting the Black community worldwide. PAAFF said about 30 films from eight different countries have been submitted, and the festival will include a foreign film block.

The festival, PAAFF said, celebrates Black August, an annual commemoration initiated by the Black Guerilla Family in San Quentin State Prison in 1979 when a group of incarcerated people came together to commemorate the deaths of brothers Jonathan P. Jackson and George Jackson while in detention.

“The Black August Film festival will welcome films from all over the world that will (talk) about the social and economic issues of the oppressed,” the festival organizers said in a statement on the event website. “Black August is an invitation to reflect on the history of the Black freedom struggle, to celebrate those who have come and gone before us, and to commit to continuing this fight for justice and liberation.”

A listing of the films selected for the Black August Film Festival showed such titles as “Jackson, Not Just a Name,” “Jew Black Too,” “Something in the Clouds,” “My Sister’s Keeper,” “We Went Out,” and “Because They Believed.”

The list also includes “Black Daddy, The Movie” and “Remember Me: The Mahalia Jackson Story.”
