Pasadena Community Partners to Host Black History Month Kick-Off Celebration on Tuesday at Perry’s Joint

Published on Jan 30, 2022

Pasadena Community Partners to host Black History Month Kick-Off celebration at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, February 1st at Perry’s Joint.

The coffee social will bring community leaders, advocates, and locals together for an intimate and meaningful kick-off celebration for Black History Month. Across the nation, February is recognized as Black History Month. An annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history.

Since the cancellation announcement of the city’s annual Black History Parade “there has been such a deep sense of hopelessness washing over our youth and community,” said Christy Zamani, the event co-organizer and Executive Director of DayOne. Adding, “We could all use some inspiration and connection.”

Reflecting on what would have been the 40th Annual Parade, the morning conversation will honor two-time Grand Marshall Michael Zinzun. Zinzun was a beloved and revered community member. Known for his quest for social justice and the civil rights movements in Pasadena and internationally.

A documentary film “Zinzun A Revolutionary Activist” based on his life and advocacy produced by the Pasadena African American Film Foundation (paaffoundation.org) will premiere online on February 14th. Followed by an in-person 4p screening Sunday, February 20th at Boston Court Pasadena.

The conversation will be moderated by James Farr, host of the national award-winning The Conversation Live. Featured speakers will share why do they do what they do, how do they plan to celebrate, what is their hope for our community and what do they think it will take for us to get there?

Perry’s Joint is located at 2051 Lincoln Ave in Pasadena and guests are asked to arrive by 8:45 to enjoy a cup of coffee and morning refreshments. The gathering will be hosted outdoors in the ChapCare courtyard. Masks are required.
