Welcome to Wacky: The Pasadena Doo Dah Parade Hits Screens Today

STAFF REPORT
Published on Nov 20, 2020

The annual Pasadena Doo Dah festival returns this Sunday in a virtual format that will have just as much weirdness and wackiness as those of years past.

If you’re in for celebrating the absurdity of Pasadena, then get ready for the 43nd Occasional Pasadena Doo Dah Parade on November 22, produced by Light Bringer Project, a Pasadena-based nonprofit arts organization.

This year, organizers of the Pasadena Doo Dah Parade understand a live event is not possible, due to the coronavirus. So they thought of something new just to keep the tradition going: “transcending the pandemic by stepping into the 2nd Dimension,” they said on the Doo Dah festival website.

That means the offbeat and eccentric parade, annually held the weekend before Thanksgiving, will exist but in virtual space.

“This becomes a great opportunity to time capsule Doo Dah into the universe!” Tom Coston, Executive Director of the Light Bringer Project, said. “It’s not just going to be pictures of people in funny hats, but what it will be – is going to surprise everyone as much as you. Imagine ‘Housewives of… Moscow.’”

So instead of lining up on the wacky parade’s usual route, you can enjoy the fun right inside your home, or even outside with a limited number of friends and family – remember, social distancing – and take part in a number of new and equally wacky ways.

The organizers said a video submission contest in the run-up to the parade was started earlier, with community members encouraged to create, march, dance, and speak things related to the Doo Dah Parade. The deadline was last week, November 14.

Results may be published within the week on www.PasadenaDooDahParade.info and on Facebook and Instagram, or may be part of an online film, “Doo Dah 2020 in 2-D!” premiering on the Doo Dah Parade’s new YouTube channel at 11 a.m. on Sunday, the organizers said.
