Pasadena Conservatory of Music (PCM) held its second Musical Interludes concert of the 2022-2023 season on Saturday, February 25, 2023. The concert, titled “Between the Wars (Mostly) | The U.S.”, was part of a series of music chronologies that PCM presents each season. The series features works from the first half of the 20th century, written by composers from three countries: France, the U.S., and Russia.

The program featured performances by PCM faculty members Nadine Hall (cello), Joshua Tan (piano), and Alexander Zhu (piano), with guest artists Robert Brophy (viola), Amy Hershberger (violin), and So Jin Kim (violin). The musicians performed works by American composers Amy Beach, Charles Ives, Samuel Barber, and Florence Price, as well as an original arrangement by Wesley Chu of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue for two pianos.

The concert was hosted by Brian Lauritzen, who also wrote the program notes. The audience was delighted by the exquisite performance of the musicians, who brought to life the spirit of the era in which the works were created. The pieces performed were selected to showcase the diversity and richness of American music during the period between World War I and World War II.

Established in 1984, PCM is an independent, nonprofit, nationally-accredited community school that aims to educate, advocate, inspire, and share through music study and performance. The conservatory offers a comprehensive curriculum that encompasses traditional and contemporary music for children and adults. More than 1,200 students attend the school annually, and over 3,000 students in schools throughout the Pasadena, CA community benefit from its extensive outreach programs.

The next Between the Wars (Mostly) focuses on Russia and will include the music of Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Kabalevsky, and Rachmaninoff. The concert will be held on April 15, at 4:00 p.m. in the Olin and Ann Barrett Recital Hall at the Pasadena Conservatory of music.
