Susie Glaze Blends Mountain Folk Music With Celtic-inspired Originals For Mesmerizing Mix

Published on Mar 4, 2022

Award-winning vocalist Susie Glaze, mandolinist Steve Rankin, fiddler Mark Indictor and bassist Fred Sanders, who together make up The Susie Glaze New Folk Ensemble, are performing at The Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena on Saturday, March 5, starting at 7 p.m.

This is the newest version of the acclaimed Los Angeles-based Americana group performing eclectic blends of mountain folk and exciting new grassy and Celtic-inspired originals, all with Susie Glaze’s remarkable voice. The group has been likened to the classic British bands Pentangle and Fairport Convention in that they blend classic folk music with rough-edged stories of tragedy and fate, with orchestral arrangements sounding like chamber music gone folk.

“Our show on March 5 will be called ‘Old and New’ as we bring our oldest repertoire to you and trace our evolution from the original Eight Hand String Band, through the years as the Hilonesome Band, to today’s iteration, The Susie Glaze New Folk Ensemble,” the band said on The Coffee Gallery’s website. “Two sets outline our path from bluegrass and old time, to original folk writing and now to world-class covers and re-inventions of the classic American songbook for our new album project coming up!”

The band has appeared at many premier venues and festivals on the West Coast, including Berkeley’s Freight & Salvage, McCabe’s Guitar Shop, The Broad Stage, the Hollywood Bowl, Palms Playhouse, Don Quixote’s Music Hall, Kuumbwa Jazz Center and Caltech Folk Music Society among others. Their CD “White Swan” was released in March 2013 and charted in the Top 50 on the Roots Music Report’s Combined Internet and Terrestrial Folk Chart.

Their new album “Not That Kind of Girl,” produced by Herb Pedersen. was released in June 2015 and is enjoying critical acclaim and radio airplay around the country.

Tickets for Saturday are $20. For reservations, call (626) 798-6236.
