Tall Men Group’s Pay Tribute to Group’s Founder in Moving Performance at The Coffee Gallery Backstage

Published on Mar 11, 2022

The Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena presents Tall Men Group on Sunday, March 13, in a tribute to the band’s late founder Jimmy Yessian, who passed away last year.

The concert begins at 3 p.m.

“We lost our founder Jimmy ‘Muffin’ Yessian to cancer in August,” the band said on their Facebook page. “Now it’s time for us to perform in his honor. We’ll be singing some of Jimmy’s songs, and others inspired by him. If you knew Jimmy, come and celebrate his life. If you didn’t, let us introduce you to his brilliant legacy in song.”

Yessian, a Bronx-born singer-songwriter, founded Tall Men Group in 2011 after dinner with five of his fellow songwriter friends.

Every month since then, Yessian cooked a gourmet meal for the band, with each member bringing in a new song written to a prompt, the group recalls. For the past 10 years, Tall Men Group has released five albums and performed all over the West Coast.

Yessian passed away last August due to pancreatic cancer. The remaining Tall Men – Edward Tree, Marty Axelrod, John Stowers, Severin Browne – carry on in his memory, although they now have to settle for takeout at the monthly meetings.
