Virtual Career Event Shines Light on Federal Career Opportunities for Local Students

Published on Mar 20, 2021

Pasadena City College is hosting a whole-day virtual career event on Sunday, March 21, and succeeding Sundays up to September to encourage students and 2020 graduates to consider training for disaster response that would qualify them for federal jobs with FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) Corps and the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC).

FEMA Corps is a unique, team-based service program that gives 18‐24‐year‐old participants the opportunity to serve communities impacted by disaster while gaining professional development experience. The NCCC is a full-time service program that covers lodging and travel expenses, allowing young adults to serve on a team and make an impact in communities across the country.

The virtual event will provide information on various career opportunities in disaster response, environmental projects, community support, rebuilding, human services, technology, urban and rural planning, public relations and management.

The organizers said these federal opportunities are an excellent option for those interested in business, computer science and IT, construction, carpentry, building trades, animal care, education, environmental management, emergency services, forestry, disaster response, public administration, social sciences, law enforcement, homeland security, public health, public relations, writing/journalism, counseling, human services, recreation, non-profit services, or careers with local, state or federal government and organizations.

Training for service with FEMA Corps and the NCCC does not require experience or a set education level, nor a diploma or degree. When you serve, you can gain experience while exploring your other career options, gain a competitive edge over other job applicants in private or government sectors, and gain leadership and management experience.

You can also obtain college credits for continuing education and workforce development, and gain new contacts by networking with government and community agency directors, new skills in your career field and expand your capabilities, and opportunities for college, trade school or apprenticeships.

You can begin the application process at age 17. Those with advanced skills and education are offered a team leader option. The program can be repeated, and provides travel, lodging, healthcare- plus childcare allowances, if applicable.

Service with FEMA Corps and NCCC can allow you to earn bi-weekly pay, plus $6,095 to pay off educational debt or pay for future educational and job training expenses.
