In a time when Martin Luther King Jr’s words should be remembered more than ever, we are forced to stay inside and celebrate among ourselves.

Luckily, the Pasadena MLK Community Coalition has put together a virtual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day at 10 a.m. Monday, available on YouTube.

At the event, winners of the annual essay and art contest sponsored by the Pasadena MLK Community Coalition will present their works as part of the celebration. The coalition has been sponsoring the contest throughout Pasadena, Altadena, Sierra Madre, and La Canada communities for over 35 years.

For 2020, the contest theme was what Dr. King deemed as life’s most persistent and urgent question, “What Are You Doing for Others?”

“The effort of students year after year in the language and creative arts demonstrates what they can do to keep Dr. King’s dreams alive,” the King Coalition said in a statement. “This experience not only increases students’ knowledge about Dr. King, but enhances their language skills, creativity, self-esteem, and character.”

Hosted by Pasadena MLK Coalition vice presidents Dr. Dana Hill and Chris Walker, this celebration will feature Terrence Roberts of the Little Rock Nine as keynote speaker. Other guest speakers include Robert B. Miller, president of the Tournament of Roses Association, and Dr. Eric D. Brown, an emergency medicine specialist.

The event will be live on YouTube starting at 10 a.m.
