Alverno Fourth Graders Bring History to Life in Interactive Living Wax Museum

The halls of the Villa at Alverno Heights Academy were transformed into a vibrant celebration of history, literature, science, sports, and popular culture as fourth grade students recently presented their annual “Living Wax Museum,” an immersive educational showcase inspired by the beloved “Who Was?” book series.

Dressed in carefully crafted costumes and standing beside colorful displays, students embodied an eclectic range of notable figures from across history and contemporary culture. Visitors encountered young scholars portraying influential historical leaders, celebrated authors, groundbreaking scientists, accomplished athletes, and well-known celebrities, each prepared to share researched biographies and facts about the individuals they represented.

The project combined academic research with creativity and public speaking, allowing students to step directly into the lives of the figures they studied. Through costume design, character presentation, and oral storytelling, the students transformed classroom learning into a dynamic, interactive experience for families, faculty, and classmates alike.

Living wax museums have become a popular educational format in schools nationwide because they encourage students to engage deeply with historical research while developing confidence in presentation skills and performance. At Alverno, the event also reflected the school’s emphasis on experiential learning and interdisciplinary education.

The “Who Was?” series, which served as the foundation for the project, introduces young readers to influential figures from history, science, politics, sports, and the arts through accessible biographies designed for elementary and middle school audiences. By selecting figures that resonated with their own interests and passions, Alverno students brought a personal dimension to the assignment while exposing visitors to a broad spectrum of inspiring individuals.

The result was an engaging educational experience that turned the Villa into a living gallery of achievement and imagination — one where history stood still only long enough to speak.
