Fifth Graders Discover Coastal California Through Hands-On Learning at Leo Carrillo State Park

Fifth-grade students from Alverno Heights Academy recently traded the classroom for the California coastline, embarking on an immersive educational field trip to Leo Carrillo State Park where they explored the rich and diverse ecosystem of coastal California firsthand.

Set against the backdrop of tide pools, sandy beaches, rocky shores, and native plant habitats, the excursion offered students a rare opportunity to experience environmental science beyond textbooks and worksheets. As they walked the trails and shoreline of the famed state park, students observed how plants, marine life, and wildlife coexist within one of Southern California’s most ecologically significant coastal environments.

The field trip reflected Alverno Heights Academy’s commitment to experiential learning — an educational approach that encourages students to actively engage with the world around them through observation, inquiry, and discovery. By stepping directly into the ecosystems they have studied in class, students gained a deeper understanding of how California’s coastal habitats function and why environmental stewardship remains essential.

Throughout the day, students examined native vegetation adapted to ocean conditions, learned about coastal erosion and conservation, and explored tide pool environments teeming with marine organisms. The experience helped connect scientific concepts such as biodiversity, ecosystems, and environmental interdependence to tangible, real-world examples.

Teachers described the outing as an opportunity for students to sharpen both their academic understanding and their sense of curiosity. Beyond the scientific lessons, the trip also encouraged teamwork, exploration, and appreciation for California’s natural beauty.

Field experiences such as the visit to Leo Carrillo State Park are a hallmark of Alverno Heights Academy’s educational philosophy, which emphasizes intellectual growth, character development, and meaningful engagement with the broader community and environment. By combining classroom instruction with immersive experiences, the school continues to foster learning that is both academically enriching and personally memorable.

For the fifth graders, the day served not only as a science lesson, but also as a reminder that some of the most meaningful learning happens when students are encouraged to step outside the classroom and experience the natural world up close.
