Maranatha’s Debate Team Continues to Win During Challenging Times

On the weekend of November 20-21, the Maranatha High School Varsity Debate Team competed in the annual SCDL Varsity Debate Tournament which, this year, was held virtually using Zoom. However, the online format did not deter Maranatha’s continued success in winning Speech and Debate tournaments.

The Varsity debaters who participated were Euel Kebebew, Jonathan Dan, Jeffery Eng, Isabella Madrid, and Samuel Tong. Tong, who has been an award-winning debater in Maranatha’s program for three years, earned a Varsity trophy for Lincoln Douglas debate.

The fall debate topic was “Resolved: The United States should provide a federal jobs guarantee.” Both the introductory and advanced classes researched, wrote, and delivered affirmative and negative arguments in the months preceding the event. While online Speech and Debate does have its challenges, the continued practices in class and club meetings show that the Minutemen have resolve – a quality that is needed for a championship debate team.

This week, the Speech and Debate classes and club meetings will shift focus to speech preparation for the SCDL Varsity Speech Tournament to be held online on Saturday, December 12.
