Octavia E. Butler Magnet Students Take to the Skies for Spring Break

Eighth grade students from Octavia E. Butler (OEB) Magnet enjoyed two unique learning opportunities during the spring recess. First, 22 students went to Pali Institute near Running Springs, CA, for three days of immersive learning including the zip line course, archery, hands-on science explorations, shelter-building, and more. Math teacher Jonathan Durfee and science teacher Jensine Lucas led the group.

Just days later, 21 students embarked on a five-day trip to Washington, D.C. The tour included the Afrofuturism exhibit at the National Museum of African American History & Culture for a up-close look at science fiction writer Octavia E. Butler’s typewriter and draft of her novel Kindred. Students also witnessed the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, enjoyed a guided tour of the U.S. Capitol, and climbed the steps of the Lincoln Memorial at night. Special thanks to Ms. Lucas for chaperoning again, along with Instructional Coach Jason Trapp!
