Arlington Garden, the only free, public Mediterranean climate garden in Pasadena, is celebrating its 16th anniversary with Autumn in the Garden on Sunday, September 26. The event will honor former Pasadena City Manager Don McIntyre and his wife, Nancy, with the inaugural McKenney Family Arlington Garden Award for their years of service and support of the garden.

Autumn in the Garden will feature musical entertainment and light bites. Event Sponsors include Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, Lisa Ashworth, Rita Whitney, James and Anne Elizabeth Sobieski, Jim McDermott and Cynthia Kurtz and Edwina and David Dedlow.

Inspired by Jan Smithen’s book Sun-Drenched Gardens: The Mediterranean Style, founders Betty and Charles McKenney and designer Mayita Dinos sought to create a water-wise garden that celebrates Southern California’s Mediterranean climate. A regenerative habitat garden offering learning, inspiration and enjoyment to visitors 365 days a year, the garden demonstrates how beautiful a community-built garden can be.

“We are proud that instead of a freeway, we built a garden.15 years ago, we were the early adopters of regenerative gardening and we are an excellent example of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers watershed concept of landscape design. We are a landmark of healthy habitat and living soil, grown from a denuded empty lot that sat dormant for almost 45 years,” said Michelle Matthews, Executive Director.

A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Arlington Garden was selected by State Senator Anthony Portantino as Senate District 25’s California Nonprofit of the Year in 2019.

The garden is well known for its sweet orange marmalade, made from Washington navel oranges grown in the garden, canned locally by E. Waldo Ward and sold at area retailers including Armstrong Garden Center, Jones Coffee and Vroman’s.
