Camerata Pacifica Brings Chamber Music Extravaganza to San Marino

Published on Oct 22, 2023

Camerata Pacifica is set to enchant the San Marino audience on Nov. 7 with a diverse program featuring Brahms, Ginastera, and Paul Dean at the Rothenberg Hall in The Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens.

Three other Southern California venues are listed on the performance schedule: Zipper Hall in Downtown Los Angeles, Music Academy in Santa Barbara, and the Janet and Ray Scherr Forum in Thousand Oaks.

The program features a fiery performance of Ginastera’s “Sonata for Cello and Piano, Op. 49,” rooted in Argentine folk music and interpreted by Camerata Pacifica’s Principal Cello Ani Aznavoorian and award-winning Principal Piano Irina Zahharenkova.

Brahms’ touching “Clarinet Trio in A Minor, Op. 114,” composed in 1891, showcases the captivating performance of Principal Clarinet Jose Franch-Ballester, who’s known for his “poetic eloquence.”

Franch-Ballester and Ani Aznavoorian will grace the stage with Paul Dean’s “Suite for Clarinet and Cello,” which pays tribute to musical legends like Sergei Prokofiev and Gustav Holst. The composition is an exciting blend of heartfelt dedication and humor, reflecting the world of Vaudeville.

This program is part of “California Festival: A Celebration of New Music,” a two-week event running from Nov. 3 to 19. It is a collaborative effort among over 50 music institutions across California, promoting new works written within the past five years.

Executive Director Adrian Spence describes the allure of Camerata Pacifica’s diverse programs.

“Camerata Pacifica’s virtuosic artists consistently deliver stellar performances that are as exciting to watch as they are to hear,” Camerata Executive Director Adrian Spence said. “Audiences are captivated by the ephemeral quality of our live performances, something that can’t be captured in a recording. And because we program such wide-ranging repertoire, there’s a buzz at our concerts as audiences anticipate the musical journey that’s about to unfold.”

The San Marino performance at The Huntington, which begins at 7 p.m.,  is just one stop in this musical odyssey, but it promises to be a captivating evening for chamber music enthusiasts. Camerata Pacifica’s next program in January 2024 will further showcase masterworks both time-honored and contemporary.

In addition to their performances, Camerata Pacifica is dedicated to serving the community. They’ve developed The Nightingale Channel, a groundbreaking resource for hospitals, in collaboration with UCLA Health, providing music programming to patients and care teams.
