Friends In Deed Announce Jazz on the Screen 2.0

Published on Aug 6, 2021

Friends In Deed’s annual fundraiser, Jazz on the Green, is staying virtual one more year with Jazz on the Screen 2.0! The weeklong event kicks off with a live video event Tuesday, Aug. 24, and throughout the week will include an online auction, playlist from local jazz musicians, mystery wine pull, and honoree spotlight videos. This year’s event will also feature local shopping and restaurant nights to support Pasadena businesses such as Vroman’s Bookstore, We Olive, Copa Vida, Nothing Bundt Cakes in Pasadena, and more!

While hundreds of people gathering in-person for Jazz on the Green still holds too many risks, Friends In Deed has planned the celebration to be meaningful and interactive, and the proceeds from the event will continue to help those experiencing homelessness and other disadvantaged and at-risk members of the local Pasadena community.

Honorees for Jazz on the Screen 2.0 include Anat Bruck, Pasadena Presbyterian Church, and Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena. These individuals and organizations have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to the needs of the Pasadena community and are dedicated supporters of Friends In Deed’s mission and programs. Friends In Deed is also honoring Goh Kurosawa, Cathy McCormick, and Kellie-Bea Cooper with Special Volunteer Recognition for their extraordinary service to the Food Pantry during the past year-and-a-half throughout the pandemic.

“We have been grateful for the outpouring of support from foundations, government entities, and individuals over the past year-and-a-half,” said Bret Schaefer, Board President of Friends In Deed, “but our work is needed now more than ever, and the needs continue to grow. We ask everyone in the community to rise to the occasion with us and support our programs with this year’s Jazz on the Screen 2.0.”

Friends In Deed, a social services agency founded in Pasadena in 1894, focuses on reducing and preventing homelessness in the local Pasadena area. Funds raised during the event will go to support its Food Pantry, The Women’s Room (a day shelter for homeless and at-risk women), Bad Weather Shelter, Street Outreach and Housing (working to end homelessness on the streets of Pasadena), and Eviction Prevention and Rental Assistance program. Friends In Deed is committed to providing compassion, connection, and dignity for vulnerable citizens experiencing times in their lives when they need assistance most.

Rabbi Joshua Levine Grater, Executive Director of Friends In Deed, says, “We have remained steadfast and committed to supporting those in our community that need a helping hand, but our motto says it best: doing together what we cannot do alone. In these challenging times, we hope folks will partner with us in this crucial work. Every year we provide care in numerous ways to thousands of local residents, and your support of Friends In Deed will ensure we can continue to help as many people as possible!”
