Nigerian Dwarf goats are turning downward dog into something entirely different at the historic Gamble House, bringing a barnyard twist to wellness at one of Southern California’s most prestigious architectural landmarks.
The century-old Arts and Crafts masterpiece now hosts “Goat Yoga” sessions on its rear lawn, where participants attempt yoga poses while small goats hop on, around and through their human playground.
“Connect with your ‘inner kid’ while moving through yoga postures suitable for all levels; from first timers who ‘just came for the goats’ to experienced yogis looking to challenge their practice,” according to event organizers.
Certified instructor Tina Lenert leads the sessions while Hello Critter’s Nigerian Dwarf goats roam freely among participants.
The goats are “known for opening hearts, widening smiles, deepening stretches & strengthening cores while weaving throughout class, interacting with each participant.”
Michelle, known as the “Goat Mama,” owns the traveling herd and has cared for pet goats since the 1980s. “Only the goats who wish to go on adventures attend Hello Critter events. Standing at the gate, when they are called, is their way of expressing their desire to join the fun,” according to the organizer.
The hour-long sessions include 15 minutes of petting and photos before and after a 30-minute yoga class. Safety requirements include a 65-pound minimum weight, signed waivers and protective shirts. Dogs are prohibited to prevent stress to the goats.
“Goat Yoga At The Gamble House” will run on Saturday, Aug. 23 at 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Gamble House, 4 Westmoreland Place, in Pasadena.
