Octavia’s Bookshelf to Host Free Children’s Event Featuring Brianna Lynn’s ‘Dahlia Dusk and the Land of Little Folk’

Published on Jul 28, 2023

Octavia’s Bookshelf, a recent independent bookstore in Pasadena, is hosting a special free children’s event this Saturday, July 29, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., to celebrate “Dahlia Dusk and the Land of Little Folk,” written by local author and therapist Brianna Lynn Johnson.

The book’s illustrator, Cor-ric Alvaro, will also be there and join the author in giving children and their families a chance to delve into the magical world of Dahlia Dusk, the main character.

The event will take place at Octavia’s Bookshelf, located at 1361 N Hill Ave. in Pasadena. Books will be available for purchase, and attendees will be treated to snacks and beverages.

“Dahlia Dusk and the Land of Little Folk” is a beautifully illustrated read-along picture book, aimed at young readers, that takes its audience on a magical journey of self-discovery and self-worth.

The main character, Dahlia Dusk, a fairy also known as DeeDee, faces issues of insecurity and self-worth, and through challenges and encounters with various characters, learns the invaluable lesson that one’s worth and value are inherent and not defined by external achievements.

Brianna Lynn Johnson, who works as a counselor with children, was inspired to write the book after noticing recurring themes of self-worth and insecurity among her young clients. Her work as a therapist, coupled with her passion for writing, led her to craft this story that not only entertains but also imparts valuable life lessons to young readers.

“Seeing my clients’ challenges makes me think that many people must be dealing with this,” she said. “If (my clients) could have read (Dahlia Dusk) when they were young, maybe this work would be easier — maybe they wouldn’t have to be grappling with this.”

The book’s message is not only for children but also for parents, as Johnson intentionally wrote it using language to be read aloud and enjoyed by both. The story’s diverse array of characters aims to provide positive representations for young readers.

“Dahlia Dusk and the Land of Little Folk” was published in 2022 and has garnered attention for its heartfelt narrative and empowering themes.

Don’t miss this enchanting free children’s event at Octavia’s Bookshelf, where young minds will embark on a journey of self-discovery with Dahlia Dusk and her friends.
