Police Reward Young Artists With Halloween Trick-or-Treat Bag When Officers Spot Coloring Contest Entries in Front Windows

Published on Oct 30, 2020

The Pasadena Police Department isn’t going to let the coronavirus hold them back from having a little fun and engaging community youth with a Reverse Trick or Treat Coloring Contest, which started Tuesday and continues through Saturday, October 31.

To be part of the contest, families can download and print an official Pasadena Police Department Halloween coloring template from the department’s website or their social media platforms.

For families who are unable to download and print the coloring template, the police department will have them available for pickup at the Police Department Records lobby during business hours – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday.

Children are encouraged to color the print-out template in their own unique style and post it in a window facing the street.

“They download it, they print it out, they color it and they display it in their front window that faces the street. So when patrol officers are driving through on patrol, they see the picture and they stop by and give the child a treat bag from us,” explained Officer Van Kim.

Officers began looking for these drawings last Tuesday as they patrolled city neighborhoods and when an officer spots one, they leave a Halloween Trick-or-Treat bag outside the home’s front door.

This special Reverse Trick-or-Treat activity is the Pasadena Police Department’s way of celebrating Halloween with kids in the community while making sure everyone is safe at home.

“More than anything, it’s an innovative way for us to outreach and engage our youth — especially given the socially distancing,” said Corporal Christian Allen. “Everybody’s trying to bunker down at home. So this is a way for us to, in a safe manner, be able to provide a fun thing to kids during the holiday that normally everybody looks forward to.”

Lt. Javier Aguilar said the Department’s Community Relations Section did some brainstorming to come up with the final program.
