“Wild,” “Fun” Improvisational ‘Freestyle Love Supreme’ Fills Pasadena Playhouse Stage

Published on Jul 9, 2022

“Freestyle Love Supreme,” an improvisational hip-hop comedy musical show started by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Anthony Veneziale in 2004, is coming to the Pasadena Playhouse starting on Tuesday, July 12, at 8 p.m.

“Freestyle Love Supreme” is a completely improvised hip-hop musical, which means every single night will be a totally different show. It’s also the name of the group that started the show in 2004. The cast first encourages suggestions from the audience, and then the Freestyle Love Supreme cast crafts a completely unique show right in front of the audience. There are no scripts, and there definitely is no time to brainstorm on how the show would run, and no time at all to rehearse!

The cast itself could be a surprise, since it may include at least three or a few of the original members, plus a few surprise performers.

“The show basically takes a group of freestyle, hip hop rappers, a band on stage, and the audience,” Pasadena Playhouse Artistic Director Danny Feldman said last year. “Everything is made up as it goes along. It’s improvisational. It is different every night. There are different guests that come. It is a wild, fun night that truly redefined what a play can be, what a musical can be.”

“Freestyle Love Supreme” is at Pasadena Playhouse, the LA home for the show, up to Aug. 7.
