A Discussion on the Stigma of Mental Health with Flintridge Sacred Heart Students and How to Deal with Them

Ms. Gallant, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy’s school counselor, leads juniors and seniors on a discussion about the stigma around mental health issues, the signs of mental illness, how social media use can negatively impact mental health, and how to know when to ask for help from a professional. The distress associated with having a family member, a colleague or a friend with mental illness may lead to feelings of guilt, anger or shame. Acknowledging these feelings is the first step towards resolving them. It is important to understand that neither you nor the person with the mental illness are to blame for it.
