Immaculate Heart 8th Grade Students Journey Through the American South on Civil Rights Immersion Trip

Over winter break, Immaculate Heart Middle & High School’s 8th Grade students traveled through the American South on a powerful educational journey exploring the history and legacy of the Civil Rights Movement. In partnership with Tzedek America, students visited key sites across Atlanta, Memphis, Selma, Birmingham, Montgomery, and communities throughout Alabama.

Throughout the trip, students walked in the footsteps of those who shaped a pivotal chapter in American history. Standing on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, visiting the Lorraine Motel and the I AM A MAN Plaza, and exploring sites such as the 16th Street Baptist Church, the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, and the Underground Railroad Museum transformed classroom learning into lived experience.

While in Birmingham, students heard firsthand testimony from Pastor Gwen Webb, who was just 14 years old when she participated as a foot soldier in the 1963 Children’s March. Pastor Webb shared her personal experiences and reflections, helping students understand the courage and commitment of young people who engaged in peaceful, nonviolent resistance in the face of injustice.

Students also visited Kelly Ingram Park, the starting point of the Children’s March, where they were guided along the Freedom Walk by Charles Wood, Director of Education at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. His insight into the city’s history and the park’s powerful sculptures helped contextualize the events that unfolded there. The group later toured the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute with Tzedek America educator Rodnell Erskine, who connected the exhibits to broader historical themes and shared personal reflections that encouraged thoughtful dialogue and understanding.

The journey continued through Montgomery and Selma, where students engaged with additional historic sites and heard from individuals who participated in the Selma to Montgomery marches. Guided tours and conversations further deepened students’ understanding of the perseverance, leadership, and moral clarity required to bring about social change.

This immersive experience reinforced the understanding that lasting change requires courage, conviction, and a willingness to stand for justice. The trip reflects Immaculate Heart’s commitment to social justice and the development of right conscience, empowering students to carry these lessons forward.

Immaculate Heart extends its gratitude to Tzedek America for its continued partnership and for guiding students through this meaningful and transformative journey.
