San Marino Unified School District Board is Accepting Applications to Fill a Vacant Seat on the Board of Education



The San Marino Unified School District (SMUSD) Board is requesting all those interested in serving on the school board to submit an application. The application is available at www.smusd.us from May 18, 2021 at Noon through Friday, June 4, 2021 at noon. Click to access the application.

Due to the resignation of board member Mr. Corey Barberie, the San Marino Unified School District currently has a vacancy on its Board of Education until the next San Marino Unified School District regular election scheduled to be held on November 8, 2022. At the May 11, 2021 Board of Education Meeting, the Board voted to initiate filling the vacancy by a provisional appointment from among qualified applicants.

The Board is requesting all those interested in serving on the school board to submit an application. The application is available below from May 18, 2021 at Noon through Friday, June 4, 2021 at noon. The Board of Education will screen, confirm the eligibility of the applications, and take public comments at a Special Board of Education Meeting on Monday, June 7, 2021 at 3:00 PM. Eligible applicant names will be announced on the morning of Tuesday, June 8, 2021 via Constant Contact. At the Tuesday, June 8, 2021 7:00 PM Regular Board of Education Meeting, there will be another opportunity for public comment. A Special Board of Education Meeting will be held on Thursday, June 10, 2021 at 5:00 PM to conduct applicant interviews in-person and optionally via Zoom, to take public comments, and to make the appointment.

To be eligible to apply for appointment to the Board of Education, an individual must meet the following qualifications as set forth in Education Code 35107: 18 years of age or older, California resident, residing within the SMUSD boundaries, be a registered voter, not be disqualified from holding a civil office, and no criminal convictions per Government Code Sections 1770, 3000-3003.

This provisional appointee will hold office until December 2, 2022. An employee of the San Marino Unified School District may not be sworn into office as an elected or appointed member of the Board, unless he or she resigns as an employee. If the employee does not resign, the employment will automatically terminate upon being sworn into office.
