Westridge School: A Hands-On Design Challenge Combining Math, Art, and A Little Bit of City Planning!

Westridge School’s Ms. Houser Fifth grade math class recently tackled a hands-on design challenge combining math, art, and a little bit of city planning!

After learning about area and volume, students were tasked with creating a 3D city or community with a specific total volume, using prisms constructed out of paper. They got creative building their cities, with some designing elaborate “villages” complete with libraries, restaurants, schools, and apartments of all shapes and sizes! They calculated the volume of each building and posted their results on a Padlet for the whole class to share feedback on each others’ work.
