Plastic Against Plastic Event Teaches Kids About The Plastics Crisis and Recycling

Published on Aug 31, 2021

Elementary-aged kids in the Pasadena area will have an opportunity to learn about the plastics crisis and sustainability during a series of “Plastic Against Plastic” classes, starting on Thursday, Sept. 2, sponsored by Ban SUP Students, the student group of Ban Single-Use Plastic, and Remainders Creative Reuse, a Pasadena non-profit.

The classes, from 4 to 5 p.m., will include lessons on creating statement art pieces for demonstrations.

Plastic Against Plastic is a high school volunteer-led project to educate the community about the plastics crisis and recycling, and to advocate for minimized plastics production, especially that of single-use-plastics.

Each session is split into two parts: Part 1 is an introduction to the plastics crisis. This stays consistent regardless of what or how many sessions one signs up for. Part 2, involving the creation of art pieces, varies to correspond to each selected session.

Each art piece will be representative of environmental issues that stem from plastics and will be used to advocate for progressive legislation.

Classes are free, but donations are encouraged. All materials will be provided.

Masks will be required during all classes. People are welcome to drop in as well and parents may attend. To sign for the class, visit www.remainderspas.org/shop/p/plastic-against-plastic-with-bansup-students.

Remainders Creative Reuse, at 787 E. Washington Blvd. Suite 101 in Pasadena, is non-profit creative space and materials depot. With a focus on creative reuse and sustainability, Remainders Pasadena uses the creative reuse model used in the materials depot, where thousands of pounds of usable materials from households and businesses are diverted from landfills.

The non-profit has hosted many intergenerational workshops, bringing together a diverse group of people to learn from each other.
