Altadena Students Pledge to Reduce Car Emissions on International Walk to School Day, October 12, 2022

Oak Knoll Montessori School in Altadena will participate in its first ever Walk to School Day to help reduce air pollution from car emissions in the community. According to the California Energy Commission, transportation accounts for 50% of California’s greenhouse gas emissions and 80% of its nitrogen oxide pollution.

As the only AMI-accredited Elementary and Adolescent Montessori school in the area, Oak Knoll Montessori draws students in from all over the San Gabriel Valley including Pasadena, Highland Park, Glendale, Sierra Madre, and San Marino. Given the long distances and lack of public transportation, most students are driven to school.

With increasing awareness of climate change and desire to reduce the school’s carbon footprint, the Oak Knoll Montessori community has pledged to start reducing its car emissions by walking to school. “Montessori children are not only aware of the impending climate crisis but are already considering ways to make a difference”, says Kira Donnelly, Head of School. “This walk is a first step, a drop in the ocean of what is needed, but it is a start. With this walk we will save one tree worth of carbon emissions. I can’t wait to see what they do next!”

Approximately 25 students from Oak Knoll Montessori will be walking to school on Wednesday, October 12 along with parents, teachers and community leaders including Altadena Town Council Member Nic Arnzen.

The event will begin at 8:00 am with kids, parents and community leaders walking from the NW Corner of Farnsworth Park. Walkers will arrive at the school between 8:30-8:45am.

The event is being organized by the Oak Knoll Family Association in collaboration with CA Clean Air Week and Altadena Town Council.

Local media are invited to attend the event at Farnsworth Park (corner of Marengo Ave and Mt Curve) from 8-8:30am. For additional information, please contact Sarah Wolf, Oak Knoll Family Association Parent Volunteer at (202) 386-2953.
